Microdermabrasion gently removes the epidermis or top layer of the stratem corneum which encourages vasodilatation, improved cell nutrition, improved skin elasticity and improved skin texture. Microdermabrasion is a safe, non-invasive procedure for resurfacing the skin and is used to treat sun damage, scarring, wrinkles and other superficial skin problems of the face, neck, chest and other areas. Also, referred to as the lunchtime peel, because the procedure takes 35-45 minutes to perform this skin resurfacing treatment and requires no down time. Microdermabrasion is safe for all skin types and particularly Asian, Hispanic and African American skin types, as there is no risk for skin discoloration and restores these skin types to a more youthful, radiant appearance. There is no age range for the use of Microdermabrasion. It is appropriate to use as needed on problematic and acne prone skin, rosacea and sensitive skin, sun-damaged and aging skin and it may be used as a preventative on young adults.Microdermabrasion by medical aestheticians is an effective medical skin care treatment that gently resurfaces the skin with the application of tiny crystals, combined with gentle abrasion for superficial ablation of the epidermis or outer layer of the skin. Abrasion of the stratum corneum removes keratin cells and the mortar layer between the cells which will allow for more topical serum penetration of nutrients into the dermis. This in turn will help in the formation of a new stratum corneum layer to the skin. The new skin is youthful and radiant with marked improvement of the old skin imperfections.The crystals are immediately vacuumed away, resulting in the removal of the top layer of the stratum corneum. We believe that the crystal-free machines produce microscopic tearing of the skin rather than the even abrasion that is produced by crystals. This abrasion is felt to be less traumatic for the dermis. It is also felt that there are multiple contamination issues with noncrystal microdermabrasion that are not seen with the crystal machines.After your microdermabrasion treatment the new living skin is soft, smooth and more receptive to pharmaceutical grade skin care products that are rich in vitamins and nutrients. Patients are encouraged to use a good sun protection following treatments.
