Frequently Asked Questions
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
The laser works by a principle called Selective Photothermolysis. The laser is pulsed (turned on) for a millisecond emitting a gentle beam of light on to the skin. The light energy passes harmlessly through the skin, but is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and hair shaft. By absorbing this laser energy, the hair follicles are disabled, impairing their ability to grow. The laser is effective on hair follicles in the active or anagen growth phase.
What is the active growth phase?
The active growth phase is or Anagen cycle is part of the complete growth cycle. The AGP is when the hair is actively growing and contains bulge (link) and papilla (link) not present during any other growth phase. It is in this phase that the laser is most effective during treatment, therefore it is important to remain within your prescribed treatment schedule
What is a hair follicle?
The hair follicle is the complete hair structure which includes the bulge, papilla and hair shaft. This is the area beneath the skin which the lasers energy is focused on in order to achieve hair reduction and removal.
What Can I expect During The Laser Hair Removal Treatment?
Treatment will take place in your practitioners office. You will wear safety eyewear to protect your eyes from the laser light. Your practitioner will guide the laser to the treatment areas with a small hand piece. Each laser pulse may be preceded and followed by a short pulse of cooling spray. A treatment could take as little as a few minutes to as long as an hour, depending on the area and condition being treated.
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Some patients may feel a slight discomfort with each laser pulse, sometimes described like the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. This discomfort resolves quickly and is minimized by Candelas DCD cooling. For some patients, a topical anesthetic may be used prior to treatment. Be sure to discuss this with your practitioner.
How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Will I Need?
The number of sessions depends on the treatment you require and the condition of your skin. For hair removal, multiple treatments are required, as the process is most effective when the hair follicle is in its active growth phase. Other conditions may clear up in only one treatment, but many factors impact the efficacy of individual laser treatments, including the severity of the condition being treated.
How Do I Prepare For Treatment?
Patients schedule for hair removal should avoid plucking, electrolysis or hair waxing approximately four to six weeks prior to treatment. If you have a history of herpes simplex virus and are scheduled for laser treatment, prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed. Also, your skin should be clean-shaven, and your skin should be thoroughly cleansed and dried, removing any makeup, creams, oils, topical anesthetics or self-tanning products before laser treatment. The intended treatment area should not be exposed to sunlight or tanning booth light for 14 days prior to treatment. Before laser treatment, prevents sun exposure by applying sunblock (SPF 30 or above).
What Type Of Results Should I Expect?
There are many empty and misleading claims made by other clinics offering laser hair removal, including the declaration that you will never shave again. The truth is you should see a 75-90 percent reduction in hair growth. The follicles that remain are damaged and produce a finer hair than you had before laser treatment. You can expect to shave much less than you do now.
What Precautions Should I Take After Treatment?
After laser treatment, prevent sun exposure by applying sunblock (SPF 30 or above). In the first few days after treatment, dont scrub or rinse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleaners. Your practitioner may advise additional precautions.
What Are The Side Effects For Laser Hair Removal?
Your risks are minimal. Side effects may include redness, swelling, hyper-pigmentation, hypo-pigmentation, blistering and purpura (a laser bruise) in the treated area-these usually don not last more than a few days. Permanent side effects are rare. Be sure to discuss potential side effects with your practitioner.
What Types Of Hair Color And Skin Color Can Be Treated With Laser Hair Removal?
While laser hair removal can be performed on virtually and skin color and hair type, hair color is the most important factor. The light emitted from the laser is attracted to the melanin, or dark pigment, in the hair follicle. This means that darker hair is treated most effectively. Treatments performed on red, blonde, and grey hair are not generally as effective.
